Let’s start with the nuts and bolts. Gotham has a website that is simple to use and the instructor is easily accessible. Class size is limited to eighteen students or less, making the experience intimate. The weekly lecture is posted online and can be read in less than fifteen minutes. The lectures cover a variety of topics, from plot and dialogue to revising and the publishing world. The lecture is complemented by a relevant and manageable assignment. Four students per week post samples of their own writing on the website for classmates to comment on. Beyond garnering feedback on your own writing, critiquing others’ work each week is a useful step in growing as a writer, too. There are several children’s book writing courses that are offered in an online format. After researching the many courses that are out there, I chose Gotham because I liked the idea that they specialize specifically in writing.
