I suppose it does happen to some people -- not to me, certainly -- but bards and storytellers used to apprentice for years because people acknowledged how important story was and how hard it is to master. Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by!

Best,

MartinaMartina Boonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03358736828122139189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8005062827798430682.post-68718499638566744232012-10-18T08:17:52.556-04:002012-10-18T08:17:52.556-04:00Wonderful!! As writers, we keep giving each other all these formulas, and then we flounder when trying to apply them. Sticking too close to plot formulas so often results in a story without heart, and focusing on whatever other "writing lesson" du jour we are working on ends up creating imbalance. Writing truly is the sum of the parts though, isn't it? And I went into it partly because I HATED the idea of rules and only having one way to do things :) And now I spend my days thinking about how to break things down into basic math :)Martina Boonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03358736828122139189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8005062827798430682.post-42214749491292781682012-10-16T22:43:49.049-04:002012-10-16T22:43:49.049-04:00Reading through this, I kept thinking, "This ...Reading through this, I kept thinking, "This is too complicated for me." Then I got to the part about math, and I couldn't help but laugh. I have a math degree, and I still can't figure this stuff out! Thanks for the post. I really needed it. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8005062827798430682.post-78439001696335662582012-10-16T21:42:06.984-04:002012-10-16T21:42:06.984-04:00I'm so sorry you get them too! i don't get...I'm so sorry you get them too! i don't get auras, i just throw up and feel like i have my head held in a vise. Glad to hear your migraine is better. I'm impressed you could write. I get auras with my migraines. I can barely see just before they hit. :PStinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11415189347501942340noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8005062827798430682.post-44026185405114183782012-10-16T18:09:43.797-04:002012-10-16T18:09:43.797-04:00Thanks, Natalie! Now it's just the headache of digging out from under the work.

That 20 times over (um, 50?) of revising without going anywhere constructive is what I'm trying to avoid this time around. It's all such an organic process. Turning points are such a great tool. Knowing the basis of what makes a story is a great way to internalize the rest. I'm just not able to juggle it all in my mind, I'm finding. Wish I could.

Good luck with the book! Hope it is going beautifully!

Best,

MartinaMartina Boonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03358736828122139189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8005062827798430682.post-80239885538931159392012-10-16T13:09:09.319-04:002012-10-16T13:09:09.319-04:00Hope your migraine is better and that you have a g...Hope your migraine is better and that you have a great conference.

My revision process for my one and only completed manuscript is so like you described only 10 to 20 or more times over.

I agree with what you say makes a good story and can actually fill in the blanks in the sentence for once. I don't use worksheets though I will look at yours because maybe I need to use them. For my second book, I've found knowing the basic turning points of a 3 act story is getting me going enough and I'm filling in the details as I go. Wish it would go faster though.Natalie Aguirrehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03756087804171246660noreply@blogger.com
