Dig
by A.S. King
Hardcover
Dutton Books for Young Readers
Released 3/26/2019

The Shoveler, the Freak, Can I Help You?, Loretta the Flea-Circus Ring Mistress, and First-Class Malcolm. These are the five teenagers lost in the Hemmings family's maze of tangled secrets. Only a generation removed from being Pennsylvania potato farmers, Gottfried and Marla Hemmings managed to trade digging spuds for developing subdivisions and now sit atop a seven-figure bank account--wealth they've declined to pass on to their adult children or their teenage grandchildren. "Because we want them to thrive," Marla always says. What does thriving look like? Like carrying a snow shovel everywhere. Like selling pot at the Arby's drive-thru window. Like a first class ticket to Jamaica between cancer treatments. Like a flea-circus in a double-wide. Like the GPS coordinates to a mound of dirt in a New Jersey forest. As the rot just beneath the surface of the Hemmings' precious suburban respectability begins to spread, the far-flung grandchildren gradually find their ways back to one another, just in time to uncover the terrible cost of maintaining the family name.

Eiffel's Tower for Young People
by Jill Jonnes
Hardcover
Triangle Square
Released 3/19/2019

Weaving together the behind-the-scenes history of the Eiffel Tower with an account of the 1889 World's Fair in Paris for which the tower was built, Jonnes creates a vivid, lively pageant of people and cultures meeting--and competing.
The book opens a window into a piece of the past that, in its passions and politics, feels timelessly modern: art, science, business, entertainment, gossip, royalty, and national pride mingle in an unforgettable portrait of a unique moment in history, when Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley became the toasts of Paris and Gustave Eiffel, builder of the tower, rose to the pinnacle of fame, only to suffer a tragic fall from grace.
Above all, the 1889 World's Fair revolved around two nations, whose potent symbols were the twin poles of the fair. France, with its long history of sophistication and cultivation, and with a new republican government eager for the country to take its place at the forefront of the modern world, presented the Eiffel Tower--the world's tallest structure--as a symbol of national pride and engineering superiority. The United States, with its brash, can-do spirit, full of pride in its frontier and its ingenuity, presented the rollicking Wild West show of Buffalo Bill Cody and the marvelous new phonograph of Thomas Edison.
Eiffel, Cody, Oakley, and Edison are just a few of the characters who populate Jonnes's dramatic history. There are also squabbling artists, a notorious newspaperman, and a generous sprinkling of royalty from around the world. Some of them emerged from the World's Fair of 1889 winners, some losers, but neither they nor any among the vast crowds who attended the fair ever forgot it. The drama, color, and personalities that made the adult book so fascinating and critically acclaimed, are all here in spades as adapted for middle grade and above by Rebecca Stefoff.

Night Music
by Jenn Marie Thorne
Hardcover
Dial Books
Released 3/19/2019

Ruby has always been Ruby Chertok: future classical pianist and daughter of renowned composer Martin Chertok. But after her horrendous audition for the prestigious music school where her father is on faculty, it's clear that music has publicly dumped her. Now Ruby is suddenly just . . . Ruby. And who is that again? All she knows is that she wants away from the world of classical music for good.

Oscar is a wunderkind, a musical genius. Just ask any of the 1.8 million people who've watched him conduct on YouTube--or hey, just ask Oscar. But while he might be the type who'd name himself when asked about his favorite composer and somehow make you love him more for it, Oscar is not the type to jeopardize his chance to study under the great Martin Chertok--not for a crush. He's all too aware of how the ultra-privileged world of classical music might interpret a black guy like him falling for his benefactor's white daughter.

But as the New York City summer heats up, so does the spark between Ruby and Oscar. Soon their connection crackles with the same alive, uncontainable energy as the city itself. Can two people still figuring themselves out figure out how to be together? Or will the world make the choice for them?

1 Roselyn Eves, author of WINTER WAR AWAKENING, on the challenges of writing a trilogy

WINTER WAR AWAKENING is the third book in the Blood Rose Rebellion series, and we're thrilled to have Roselyn Eves with us to chat about it.

Roselyn, what scene was really hard for you to write and why, and is that the one of which you are most proud? Or is there another scene you particularly love?

Winter War Awakening is essentially a war novel, and battle scenes are always hard for me to write, in part because I don't love reading them. I worked around this by focusing most of the book on the character's personal journeys, and when I did have to write battle scenes, I kept them tightly focused on the character POV. I think I'm most proud of the final battle scene, because it was hard, and because the characters had to fight and grieve at the same time. I don't know that it's my *favorite* scene of the book, but I'm pleased with how it turned out.

What book or books would most resonate with readers who love your book--or visa versa?

Readers who enjoy their fantasy mixed with history, folklore, and monsters would also like Jessica Cluess's A Shadow Bright and Burning Series, Julie Dao's Forest of a Thousand Lanterns, Naomi Novik's Uprooted and Spinning Silver, and Katherine Arden's Bear and the Nightingale series.

What did this book teach you about writing or about yourself?

Writing a trilogy was harder than I'd expected--not to come up with an idea that would span three books, but to craft each book so that it had a clear arc, so that the characters were growing in different ways in each book and not simply repeating the same character arc of the first book. But it also reminded me that in life, we often learn similar lessons over and over again, but new experiences deepen what we learn (and sometimes complicate what we learn). I had pretty severe anxiety writing the second book, and I think that bleeds over into the third book with a character who's reluctant at first to take action because all her prior actions have backfired on her. Learning to work through my own fears was really helpful in terms of helping my character work through hers.

What do you hope readers will take away from WINTER WAR AWAKENING?

There's a Hungarian proverb that my character thinks of often in the book: one swallow does not make a summer. A single soldier can't win a war, a single person advocating for change can't change everything. But people working together have tremendous power.

How long or hard was your road to publication? How many books did you write before this one, and how many never got published?

I feel like my story is a middle-of-the-road story. I wrote a lot as a teen (probably 3-4 books) and then stopped until after graduate school. By then, I had two small kids, and it took me probably 5 years or so of writing seriously for publication and a queried book that didn't go anywhere to get an agent. I got lucky--my book trilogy went out just when fantasy was hitting a peak, and it sold relatively quickly to Knopf. I think the market for fantasy is harder now.

What advice would you most like to pass along to other writers?

Write because you love to write. If you're writing for any other reason (fame, bragging rights, money), that won't be enough to compensate for how hard publishing can be. There's a lot that's outside of your control--beyond a certain level of craft, so much of selling your book can be a matter of timing in terms of market and editor interest, so many other factors. Some good books don't get picked up for publication, for lots of reasons. Some books that do get published don't sell very well. All you can really control is the words you set on the page and the joy that comes from creation. Enjoy the creation, find yourself a community that will celebrate that creation with you, and keep working.

What are you working on now?

I'm working on a YA historical set in the American West around the 1878 solar eclipse.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rosalyn Eves grew up in the Rocky Mountains, dividing her time between reading books and bossing her siblings into performing her dramatic scripts. As an adult, the telling and reading of stories is still one of her favorite things to do. When she’s not reading or writing, she enjoys spending time with her chemistry professor husband and three children, watching British period pieces, or hiking through the splendid landscape of southern Utah, where she lives. She dislikes housework on principle.

She has a PhD in English from Penn State, which means she also endeavors to inspire college students with a love for the English language. Sometimes it even works.

Sixteen-year-old Cade Curtis is an angel thief. After his mother’s family rejected him for being born out of wedlock, he and his dad moved to the apartment above a local antique shop. The only payment the owner Mrs. Walker requests: marble angels, stolen from graveyards, for her to sell for thousands of dollars to collectors. Zorra, a young ocelot, watches the bayou rush past her yearningly. The poacher who captured and caged her has long since lost her, and Zorra is getting hungrier and thirstier by the day. Trapped, she only has the sounds of the bayou for comfort—but it tells her help will come soon.

Before Zorra, Achsah, a slave, watched the very same bayou with her two young daughters. After the death of her master, Achsah is free, but she’ll be damned if her daughters aren’t freed with her. All they need to do is find the church with an angel with one hand open and one hand closed…

SHOUT
by Laurie Halse Anderson
Hardcover
Viking Books for Young Readers
Released 3/12/2019

Bestselling author Laurie Halse Anderson is known for the unflinching way she writes about, and advocates for, survivors of sexual assault. Now, inspired by her fans and enraged by how little in our culture has changed since her groundbreaking novel Speak was first published twenty years ago, she has written a poetry memoir that is as vulnerable as it is rallying, as timely as it is timeless. In free verse, Anderson shares reflections, rants, and calls to action woven between deeply personal stories from her life that she's never written about before. Searing and soul-searching, this important memoir is a denouncement of our society's failures and a love letter to all the people with the courage to say #MeToo and #TimesUp, whether aloud, online, or only in their own hearts. Shout speaks truth to power in a loud, clear voice-- and once you hear it, it is impossible to ignore.

When the Sky Fell on Splendor
by Emily Henry
Hardcover
Razorbill
Released 3/12/2019

Almost everyone in the small town of Splendor, Ohio, was affected when the local steel mill exploded. If you weren't a casualty of the accident yourself, chances are a loved one was. That's the case for seventeen-year-old Franny, who, five years after the explosion, still has to stand by and do nothing as her brother lies in a coma.

In the wake of the tragedy, Franny found solace in a group of friends whose experiences mirrored her own. The group calls themselves The Ordinary, and they spend their free time investigating local ghost stories and legends, filming their exploits for their small following of YouTube fans. It's silly, it's fun, and it keeps them from dwelling on the sadness that surrounds them.

Until one evening, when the strange and dangerous thing they film isn't fiction--it's a bright light, something massive hurtling toward them from the sky. And when it crashes and the teens go to investigate...everything changes.

0 Laura Silverman, author of YOU ASKED FOR PERFECT, on putting down the red pen

We're thrilled to have Laura Silverman with us to share more about her latest novel, YOU ASKED FOR PERFECT.

Laura, what did this book teach you about writing or about yourself?

It was really interesting to write a book about the perils of perfectionism – because don’t you want your book to be perfect? I found my struggles mirroring Ariel’s struggles. I was writing a book with the message that perfect is overrated, and yet, I was still somehow pushing myself to write a perfect book. Eventually, I was able to take a step back. Were weeks or months of additional nitpicky edits going to create a perfect book? No, a perfect book probably isn’t even a real thing. I looked at the book as it stood and was really proud of it, and it was time to put down the red pen.

What do you hope readers will take away from YOU ASKED FOR PERFECT?

I hope teen readers will take away the message that their grades do not define them. I hope adult reads will examine how they add to the pressure in teens’ lives.

What's your writing ritual like? Do you listen to music? Work at home or at a coffee shop or the library, etc? What gets you into the mood to write?

I definitely prefer to write in the mornings or afternoons. Depending on the work for the day and my mood, I’ll write at a coffee shop, library, or home, but I almost always require iced tea. I often listen to white noise, like the sounds of a library or a rainstorm.

What are you working on now?

I’m currently writing my third novel, another YA contemporary. I can’t share much about it yet, but I’m excited!

ABOUT THE BOOK

You Asked for Perfect
by Laura Silverman
Paperback
Sourcebooks Fire
Released 3/5/2019

Senior Ariel Stone is the perfect college applicant: first chair violinist, dedicated volunteer, active synagogue congregant, and expected valedictorian. And he works hard―really hard―to make his success look effortless. A failed calculus quiz is not part of his plan. Not when he's number one. Not when his peers can smell weakness like a freshman's body spray.

Ariel throws himself into studying. His friends will understand if he skips a few plans, and he can sleep when he graduates. But as his grade continues to slide, Ariel realizes he needs help and reluctantly enlists a tutor, his classmate Amir. The two have never gotten along, but Ariel has no other options.

Ariel discovers he may not like calculus, but he does like Amir. Except adding a new relationship to his long list of commitments may just push him past his limit.

2 So Long, Farewell

In October of 2014, I got an email from Martina Boone, the founder of Adventures in YA Publishing, asking if I wanted to join AYAP as the Interview Coordinator.
I’d been a long-time reader and was honored, thrilled, and more than a bit anxious about becoming part of the AYAP team.

Now it's four-plus years later, and I’ve gotten to know wonderful members of the AYAP community, amazing authors, and lovely publicists. I’ve also experienced a part of the publishing biz I didn’t know much about before.

And I’ve learned so much from all the author interviews I’ve done. The YA community is extremely generous with their advice and encouragement, and I just hope I manage to retain a fraction of the knowledge I’ve absorbed over the years.
One of my favorite parts of being the Interview Coordinator was covering YALLFest every year. I got to interview authors in person who left me start struck, like R.L. Stine, Jonathan Stroud, Sara Shepard, Patrick Ness, Veronica Roth, and many other YA rock stars. It was always such a treat for this shy gal who has been inhaling YA novels for much of her life.

But as much as I’ve enjoyed it, it’s time to move on … although for happy reasons … several of them!

At the end of December, after years of querying, I finally signed with an agent!!!

Although ... not for a YA novel.
I actually got inspired to write a nonfiction picture book about … animal butts! This complete 180 in my writing is what finally snagged me an agent. If you’re interested in my journey, here’s my “I Have an Agent!!!” post.

In addition to that excitement, I’m also making another movie! This one is a horror anthology in the vein of The Twilight Zone and Tales From the Crypt. It’s called Grave Intentions, and my brother and I won a grant to make it. We’ve already selected the short films and now need to write and film the wraparound. If thrills and chills are your thing, give us a follow on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

As if that weren’t enough, I’m also working on a project called Transmedia Mutts. Right now it’s a Facebook group with free training videos and feedback about crafting killer pitches, but I’ll soon be expanding it into other trainings to support writing, querying, and marketing. Come join us – it’s a fun and supportive community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/transmediamutts/
You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
Whew! With so much going on and my writing veering from YA, it seemed the right time to move on to new adventures. Even if it does make me sad.

However, I’m excited to announce that Riki Cleveland is taking over as the AYAP Interview Coordinator. In fact, I officially passed the torch a few weeks ago, it’s just taken me a while to write this post.
Riki writes YA novels and works for Entangled Publishing, so she's extremely familiar with the world of YA. Plus she's BFFs with our WoW Guest Post Coordinator Kelly deVos, so that automatically makes her awesome. Martina and I know she's going to do a great job!

I’ll still be hanging around a bit. Martina has invited me to write guest posts if I feel inspired, and I have some fabulous interviews from YALLFest that I still need to transcribe (oops!). And you can always find me on Twitter and Instagram (usually when I should be writing!).

I’ve so enjoyed being part of the AYAP community, and I hope to see you around the interwebs.

Write on!

Jocelyn
