A Madness So Discreet
by Mindy McGinnis
Signed Hardcover Giveaway
U.S. and Canada Only
Katherine Tegen Books
Released 10/6/2015

Grace Mae knows madness.

She keeps it locked away, along with her voice, trapped deep inside a brilliant mind that cannot forget horrific family secrets. Those secrets, along with the bulge in her belly, land her in a Boston insane asylum.

When her voice returns in a burst of violence, Grace is banished to the dark cellars, where her mind is discovered by a visiting doctor who dabbles in the new study of criminal psychology. With her keen eyes and sharp memory, Grace will make the perfect assistant at crime scenes. Escaping from Boston to the safety of an ethical Ohio asylum, Grace finds friendship and hope, hints of a life she should have had. But gruesome nights bring Grace and the doctor into the circle of a killer who stalks young women. Grace, continuing to operate under the cloak of madness, must hunt a murderer while she confronts the demons in her own past.

In this beautifully twisted historical thriller, Mindy McGinnis, acclaimed author of Not a Drop to Drink and In a Handful of Dust, explores the fine line between sanity and insanity, good and evil—and the madness that exists in all of us.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about A Madness So Discreet?

My favorite thing is the setting. The asylum that houses Grace and Dr. Thornhollow is a real location - the Athens Lunatic Asylum in Athens, Ohio. It served in it's capacity as a functioning mental health institution until 1996, and is currently owned by Ohio University. The patient wards are falling into disrepair but the main building is an art museum and there are some offices located there as well.

Gathering Deep
by Lisa Maxwell
Signed Paperback Giveaway
U.S. Only

Flux
Released 10/8/2015

When Chloe Sabourin wakes in a dark, New Orleans cemetery with no memory of the previous days, she can hardly believe the story her friends tell her. They say Chloe was possessed by a witch named Thisbe, who had used the darkest magic to keep herself alive for over a century. They tell her that the witch is the one responsible for the unspeakable murders that nearly claimed the life of Chloe's friend, Lucy. Most unbelievable of all, they say that Thisbe is Chloe’s own mother. As she struggles with this devastating revelation and tries to rebuilt her life, Chloe wants nothing to do with the magic that corrupted her mother…especially since she feels drawn to it.

Now, a new series of ritualistic killings suggests that Thisbe is plotting again, and Chloe is drawn unwillingly back into the mystical underworld of the French Quarter. To stop Thisbe before she kills again, Chloe and her friends must learn what they can from the mysterious Mama Legba. But when her boyfriend Piers vanishes, Chloe will have to risk everything and embrace her own power to save the one person she has left… even if that means bringing down her mother.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Gathering Deep?

SWEET UNREST was really the first book I finished—the book that made me feel like, maybe I could be a writer. But with GATHERING DEEP, I had a bigger challenge—the dreaded pressure of the second book. Add to that fact that GATHERING DEEP is a follow-up companion novel to SWEET UNREST, and the pressure was increased to make sure I revisited the world I’d created in the first book without feeling repetitive and to make sure I added new insights and depth to the characters instead of rehashing old character arcs. It was a struggle for a while there, but I’m so happy with the way the book came out as a whole, because GATHERING DEEP does one of my favorite things—it takes a villain from the first book and turns her into a more fully realized and sympathetic character. Lucy, the MC in SWEET UNREST, is a part of GATHERING DEEP, but this book isn’t her story, it’s Chloe’s story, and to a large extent, it’s Thisbe’s. It’s a story about a girl coming to terms with who—and what—she is, a story about making the hard choices about whether you’ll let your past and your family affect your future. But maybe my favorite thing about the book is that Chloe’s voice came to me so clearly while I was writing, and I think it really jumps off the page. I really love that it’s a book that feels very much like a continuation of the first novel, but also feels completely different.

Romancing the Dark in the City of Light
by Ann Jacobus
Signed Hardcover Giveaway
U.S. Only

St. Martin's Griffin; First Edition edition
Released 10/6/2015

A troubled teen, living in Paris, is torn between two boys, one of whom encourages her to embrace life, while the other—dark, dangerous, and attractive—urges her to embrace her fatal flaws.

Haunting and beautifully written, with a sharp and distinctive voice that could belong only to this character, Romancing the Dark in the City of Light is an unforgettable young adult novel.

Summer Barnes just moved to Paris to repeat her senior year of high school. After being kicked out of four boarding schools, she has to get on the right track or she risks losing her hefty inheritance. Summer is convinced that meeting the right guy will solve everything. She meets two. Moony, a classmate, is recovering against all odds from a serious car accident, and he encourages Summer to embrace life despite how hard it can be to make it through even one day. But when Summer meets Kurt, a hot, mysterious older man who she just can't shake, he leads her through the creepy underbelly of the city-and way out of her depth.

When Summer's behavior manages to alienate everyone, even Moony, she's forced to decide if a life so difficult is worth living. With an ending that'll surprise even the most seasoned reader, Romancing the Dark in the City of Light is an unputdownable and utterly compelling novel.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Romancing the Dark in the City of Light?

My favorite thing about this story is probably the character of Moony—main character Summer’s love interest—who is definitely more lovable than his two co-stars. His given name is Munir but he goes by his nickname. He’s an overachiever, yet generous with his time and attention to others. He’s an insider in three different cultures, having parents from two and growing up in a third: Kuwait/the Arabian Gulf, the US, and France/the E.U., although he’s not sure where he truly belongs. He understands how cultures can divide us if we don’t look below the surface. He over-compensates for the difficulties he’s had in the past, most notably the childhood accident that left him with several physical disabilities. He understands better than most about the value and fragility of life which makes him a good companion for suicidal Summer. Overall, his positive attitude, his perseverance, and his faith take him far. He’s been accused of being too accommodating to messed-up Summer, of being almost saint-like. He’s not. He harbors some hard secrets of his own.

The Detour
by S.A. Bodeen
Signed Hardcover Giveaway
U.S. and Canada Only
Feiwel & Friends
Released 10/6/2015

On her way to a writer’s conference, a bestselling teenage author takes a detour that has been deliberately set up by her biggest fans—a mother and daughter who kidnap her.

Livvy Flynn is a big deal—she’s a New York Times-bestselling author whose YA fiction has sold all over the world. She’s rich, she’s famous, she’s gorgeous, and she’s full of herself.

When she’s invited to an A-list writer’s conference, she decides to accept so she can have some time to herself. She’s on a tight deadline for her next book, and she has no intention of socializing with the other industry people at the conference.

And then she hits the detour. Before she knows it, her brand new car is wrecked, she’s hurt, and she’s tied to a bed in a nondescript shack in the middle of nowhere. A woman and her apparently manic daughter have kidnapped her. And they have no intention of letting her go.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about The Detour?

My favorite thing about the book is Flute Girl. I’ve had a lot of bad guys in my books, but I feel like she is the worst. And I love that.

The Edge
by Roland Smith
Signed Hardcover Giveaway (2 Copies)
U.S. Only

HMH Books for Young Readers
Released 10/6/2015

The International Peace Ascent is the brainchild of billionaire Sebastian Plank: Recruit a global team of young climbers and film an inspiring, world-uniting documentary. The adventure begins when fifteen-year-old Peak Marcello and his mountaineer mother are helicoptered to a remote base camp in the Hindu Kush Mountains on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. When the camp is attacked and his mother taken, Peak has no choice but to track down the perpetrators to try to save her. Fans of the bestselling Peak will be thrilled with this gripping, high-stakes sequel.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about The Edge?

It’s a tie. I like the fact that all of my grandchildren are in THE EDGE. JR, Will, and Jack are back after their adventure on Everest in PEAK, along with the newcomers Ethan (who was angry that he wasn’t in PEAK, even though he wasn’t born until long after PEAK was published), and Alessia (who cannot read yet, but will enjoy seeing herself in a book when she can read). My other favorite thing about THE EDGE, and all of my previous novels, is that it is published, out in the wild, ready to be read.

An Inheritance of Ashes
by Leah Bobet
Hardcover Giveaway (2 Copies)
U.S. Only

Clarion Books
Released 10/6/2015

The strange war down south—with its rumors of gods and monsters—is over. And while sixteen-year-old Hallie and her sister wait to see who will return from the distant battlefield, they struggle to maintain their family farm.

When Hallie hires a veteran to help them, the war comes home in ways no one could have imagined, and soon Hallie is taking dangerous risks—and keeping desperate secrets. But even as she slowly learns more about the war and the men who fought it, ugly truths about Hallie’s own family are emerging. And while monsters and armies are converging on the small farm, the greatest threat to her home may be Hallie herself.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about An Inheritance of Ashes?

I love the sheer weirdness of the world and the book. It's a book that didn't work for me, writing-wise, until a bird with spider eyes and claws crashed into the protagonist's window, and everything after has this flavour of the uncanny that was both unsettling -- and amazingly fun! -- to create. Giant walking trees made of twisted deer horn, check. Parallel worlds, check. Twisting sandstorm gods nobody quite understands, check.

And yet, everyone in it is a regular, grounded person, trying to be good to each other and deal with the fallout all this has on their regular lives.

So I love the off-the-wall weirdness. But I love the grace with which the characters face it, and stand.

She has suffered a horrible tragedy and has to face some dark times, but through it all she never gives up. No matter what she is faced with she always fights. She keeps going no matter what. We'll Never Be Apart
by Emiko Jean
Signed ARC Giveaway

HMH Books for Young Readers
Released 10/6/2015

Murder.

Fire.

Revenge.

That’s all seventeen-year-old Alice Monroe thinks about. Committed to a mental ward at Savage Isle, Alice is haunted by memories of the fire that killed her boyfriend, Jason. A blaze her twin sister Cellie set. But when Chase, a mysterious, charismatic patient, agrees to help her seek vengeance, Alice begins to rethink everything. Writing out the story of her troubled past in a journal, she must confront hidden truths.

Is the one person she trusts only telling her half the story? Nothing is as it seems in this edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller from the debut author Emiko Jean.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about We'll Never Be Apart?

I really love the scenes between Jason, Alice and Cellie. The three had such a complex, multi-faceted, intense relationship that writing their scenes was literally draining but also the most rewarding. I really loved the early diary entry when Alice and Celia and Jason are at Roman’s house. And Alice makes paper lions for Jason.

Dreamstrider
by Lindsay Smith
Hardcover
Roaring Brook Press
Released 10/6/2015

A high-concept, fantastical espionage novel set in a world where dreams are the ultimate form of political intelligence.

Livia is a dreamstrider. She can inhabit a subject's body while they are sleeping and, for a short time, move around in their skin. She uses her talent to work as a spy for the Barstadt Empire. But her partner, Brandt, has lately become distant, and when Marez comes to join their team from a neighborhing kingdom, he offers Livia the option of a life she had never dared to imagine. Livia knows of no other dreamstriders who have survived the pull of Nightmare. So only she understands the stakes when a plot against the Empire emerges that threatens to consume both the dreaming world and the waking one with misery and rage.

A richly conceived world full of political intrigue and fantastical dream sequences, at its heart Dreamstrider is about a girl who is struggling to live up to the potential before her.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Dreamstrider?

I loved getting to upend a number of tropes in DREAMSTRIDER. The whole book came to me as a sly inversion of the Chosen One concept, which is actually something I hate—so I set out to find a way to make it both meaningful and subversive, at least to me. I loved getting to build a fantasy society (three of them, actually) from the ground up, too, because I got to really look for opportunities to enhance the themes I wanted to convey.

Orbiting Jupiter
by Gary D. Schmidt
Hardcover
Clarion Books
Released 10/6/2015

The two-time Newbery Honor winner Gary D. Schmidt delivers the shattering story of Joseph, a father at thirteen, who has never seen his daughter, Jupiter. After spending time in a juvenile facility, he’s placed with a foster family on a farm in rural Maine. Here Joseph, damaged and withdrawn, meets twelve-year-old Jack, who narrates the account of the troubled, passionate teen who wants to find his baby at any cost. In this riveting novel, two boys discover the true meaning of family and the sacrifices it requires.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Orbiting Jupiter?

The voice of Jack, the narrator. The interesting narrative problem for the book--at least, interesting to me--is that the narrator is a very young and somewhat naive twelve-year-old kiddo, but Joseph, the boy he is writing about, is a very old fourteen-year-old kiddo. In many ways, they are much more than two years apart. So I worked hard to capture a young voice dealing with adult issues, and hope that it came off right.

The White Rose
by Amy Ewing
Hardcover
HarperTeen
Released 10/6/2015

Violet is on the run. After the Duchess of the Lake catches Violet with Ash, the hired companion at the Palace of the Lake, Violet has no choice but to escape the Jewel or face certain death. So along with Ash and her best friend, Raven, Violet runs away from her unbearable life of servitude.

But no one said leaving the Jewel would be easy. As they make their way through the circles of the Lone City, Regimentals track their every move, and the trio barely manages to make it out unscathed and into the safe haven they were promised—a mysterious house in the Farm.

But there’s a rebellion brewing, and Violet has found herself in the middle of it. Alongside a new ally, Violet discovers her Auguries are much more powerful than she ever imagined. But is she strong enough to rise up against the Jewel and everything she has ever known?

The White Rose is a raw, captivating sequel to The Jewel that fans won’t be able to put down until the final shocking moments.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about The White Rose?

Oh, what a tough question! I guess it’s two things and they sort of intertwine. I love the way that nature is woven into this particular book, because I am a huge environmentalist. I truly feel that we as human beings do not value the place that gives us life, or appreciate the power that nature has to destroy. Nature is unselfish. In the first book, I got to explore the concept of ownership over one’s own body, and while that’s still certainly a theme, it’s nice to layer it with another issue I’m passionate about.

The second thing I love is the setting. As with The Jewel, the White Rose is not actually a rose, but a place. I don’t want to give too much away, but I loved this location, and most of the latter half of the book takes place there. It’s very rustic and homey, quite different from the opulent palaces of the Jewel. It worked really well with the way I wanted to use nature, to show the value of a balance with the earth. I wish I could conjure it up in real life!

After seven years tucked away at an East coast boarding school, Delilah Blue returns to her small Kansas hometown to find that not much has changed. Her parents are still uptight and disinterested, her bedroom is exactly the way she left it, and the outcast Gavin Timothy still looks like he’s crawled out of one of her dark, twisted drawings.

Delilah is instantly smitten.

Gavin has always lived in the strange house: an odd building isolated in a stand of trees where the town gives in to mild wilderness. The house is an irresistible lure for Delilah, but the tall fence surrounding it exists for good reason, and Gavin urges Delilah to be careful. Whatever lives with him there isn’t human, and isn’t afraid of hurting her to keep her away.

The Rest of Us Just Live Here
by Patrick Ness
Hardcover
HarperTeen
Released 10/6/2015

What if you aren’t the Chosen One?

The one who’s supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts, or whatever the heck this new thing is, with the blue lights and the death?

What if you’re like Mikey? Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again.

Because sometimes there are problems bigger than this week’s end of the world, and sometimes you just have to find the extraordinary in your ordinary life.

Even if your best friend is worshiped by mountain lions.

Award-winning writer Patrick Ness’s bold and irreverent novel powerfully reminds us that there are many different types of remarkable.
