0 Emiko Jean, author of WE'LL NEVER BE APART, on the benefits of writing detailed outlines

WE'LL NEVER BE APART is the debut novel from Emiko Jean, and we're glad she could join us to chat about writing.

Emiko, how long did you work on WE'LL NEVER BE APART?

The first draft of WE’LL NEVER BE APART was quick, about three months. Then I spent a good six to nine months revising it. I wrote WE’LL NEVER BE APART without outlining. Since then I’ve learned my lesson and I’ve streamlined my drafting and revising process by writing a detailed outline. This has lead to quicker drafting and revisions!

What do you hope readers will take away from WE'LL NEVER BE APART?

I hope readers will see and experience the real heart of the story, which is about adversity. How we handle obstacles. How we triumph. And sometimes how we inevitably fail.

How long or hard was your road to publication? How many books did you write before this one, and how many never got published?

I wrote a really bad YA fantasy book about four years ago. It was my first full-length novel. I did find representation for it and went on submission with it – but it was never taken to acquisitions. Looking back I see that first manuscript wasn’t in good enough shape to be published. So I went back to the drawing board and developed a concept about two sisters with a complicated relationship. That book became WE’LL NEVER BE APART. I moved agencies and my new agent asked for some revisions on WE’LL NEVER BE APART. In a few months we went on submission and the book went to auction. The rest is history.

What's your writing ritual like? Do you listen to music? Work at home or at a coffee shop or the library, etc?

When drafting I listen to music. I always make a playlist for the novel I’m writing. I even have “theme” songs for certain characters or chapters. I have an awesome home office where I story board my manuscripts so most of the time I work from there. But if I need a change of scene or if I’m struggling with finding the words I’ll move to a new location – coffee shop, library, hotel lobby. When revising I usually need a quiet space. So the music is turned off and I work from my office.

What are you working on now?

I’m writing another thriller. But that’s all I’m willing to say for now! ☺
