Tina, what was your inspiration for writing SERIOUSLY WICKED?
The idea suddenly jumped in my head for a modern Rapunzel, where a girl was stuck living with a wicked witch. Cam just started telling me her story and her voice leaped onto the page. I was so delighted to be working on something funny and the whole thing just poured out.
What's your writing ritual like? Do you listen to music? Work at home or at a coffee shop or the library, etc?
I have two small children, so my writing ritual has become – wait until they’re asleep, and then write like mad! I used to have more of an easy-going routine where I would get my tiny laptop, some tea, sit down on the couch, think for awhile.... Now I have to stay pretty focused. I also try to figure out what I’m writing ahead of time – I work on plot holes while I’m pushing the baby in the stroller, for example – and then when I can finally sit down at my desk I know what I want to put in the next scene.
What advice would you most like to pass along to other writers?
My favorite advice is to think of all the things you like, and put them all in. (Or, put another way, write the book you most want to read.) That’s how I ended up with a book about pelvis-shaking demons, paranoid witches, semi-invisible dragons, cute boy-band boys, and a poor girl stuck in the middle just trying to put everything right.
What are you working on now?
Seriously Wicked is a complete standalone, but I’m working on the next story to go after it. So there will be another funny adventure involving the witch’s next plans to take over the world. You can’t keep a megalomaniac witch down forever, you know.
ABOUT THE BOOKSeriously Wicked by Tina Connolly
Tor Teen Released 5/5/2015
The only thing worse than being a witch is living with one.
Camellia’s adopted mother wants Cam to grow up to be just like her. Problem is, Mom’s a seriously wicked witch.
Cam’s used to stopping the witch’s crazy schemes for world domination. But when the witch summons a demon, he gets loose—and into Devon, the cute new boy at school.
Now Cam’s suddenly got bigger problems than passing Algebra. Her friends are getting zombiefied. Their dragon is tired of hiding in the RV garage. For being a shy boy-band boy, Devon is sure kissing a bunch of girls. And a phoenix hidden in the school is going to explode on the night of the Halloween Dance.
To stop the demon before he destroys Devon’s soul, Cam might have to try a spell of her own. But if she’s willing to work spells like the witch...will that mean she’s wicked too?
