Manor of Secrets
by Katherine Longshore
Signed Hardcover Giveaway
Point
Released 1/28/2014

The year is 1911. And at The Manor, nothing is as it seems . . .

Lady Charlotte Edmonds: Beautiful, wealthy, and sheltered, Charlotte feels suffocated by the strictures of upper-crust society. She longs to see the world beyond The Manor, to seek out high adventure. And most of all, romance.

Janie Seward: Fiery, hardworking, and clever, Janie knows she can be more than just a kitchen maid. But she isn't sure she possesses the courage -- or the means -- to break free and follow her passions.

Both Charlotte and Janie are ready for change. As their paths overlap in the gilded hallways and dark corridors of The Manor, rules are broken and secrets are revealed. Secrets that will alter the course of their lives. . . forever.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Manor of Secrets?

My favorite thing about MANOR OF SECRETS is the upstairs/downstairs dual points of view. I loved the challenge of writing from two perspectives and keeping an eye on two distinct character arcs while trying to wrangle them into a compelling and cohesive story arc. It gave me fresh insight and renewed admiration for authors like Veronica Rossi (UNDER THE NEVER SKY) and Rainbow Rowell (ELEANOR & PARK) who do this so seamlessly and beautifully.

But more than the writing challenge, I appreciated the opportunity to be able to look at the setting, the events and the historical time period from the perspectives of two very different girls who lived two very different lives. Having written mostly about the historically elite in my Tudor novels, I relished the chance to be able to look at the other side of life through the eyes of Janie the kitchen maid, knowing that if I had been alive in Edwardian England, I probably would have been in her shoes and not the kidskin boots of Charlotte upstairs.

No Place
by Todd Strasser
Signed ARC Giveaway
Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Released 1/28/2014

When Dan and his family go from middle class to homeless, issues of injustice rise to the forefront in this relatable, timely novel from Todd Strasser.

It seems like Dan has it all. He’s a baseball star who hangs with the popular crowd and dates the hottest girl in school. Then his family loses their home.

Forced to move into the town’s Tent City, Dan feels his world shifting. His friends try to pretend that everything’s cool, but they’re not the ones living among the homeless. As Dan struggles to adjust to his new life, he gets involved with the people who are fighting for better conditions and services for the residents of Tent City. But someone wants Tent City gone, and will stop at nothing until it’s destroyed...

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about No Place?

Somewhat sadly, I suppose my favorite thing about NO PLACE is its timeliness. When I started working on the book nearly three years ago, I had no way of knowing what the state of homelessness would be in early 2014. Now here we are just a month from pub date and this week the New York Times is running a big front-page series about homelessness while the most recent statistics indicate that there are more homeless children here than at any time since the Great Depression. I’ve always felt that books like these – including GIVE A BOY A GUN and IF I GROW UP – present something of a moral dilemma. The worse the situation is, the more I, the author, stands to gain. And yet I strongly believe these topics need to be addressed.

To give an example of why I feel NO PLACE is an important book for today’s young adults, I recall doing a Skype with a class from a suburban school in Florida back when I was just beginning my research. When I asked the students if there were any homeless children attending their school, they all said no. But when the Skype session ended and the students were leaving the room, the teacher came up to the camera and said in a low voice that there were indeed a number of children in the school whose parents were homeless. The other students had no idea.

Uninvited
by Sophie Jordan
Hardcover Giveaway
HarperTeen
Released 1/28/2014

The Scarlet Letter meets Minority Report in bestselling author Sophie Jordan's chilling new novel about a teenage girl who is ostracized when her genetic test proves she's destined to become a murderer.

When Davy Hamilton's tests come back positive for Homicidal Tendency Syndrome (HTS)-aka the kill gene-she loses everything. Her boyfriend ditches her, her parents are scared of her, and she can forget about her bright future at Juilliard. Davy doesn't feel any different, but genes don't lie. One day she will kill someone.

Only Sean, a fellow HTS carrier, can relate to her new life. Davy wants to trust him; maybe he's not as dangerous as he seems. Or maybe Davy is just as deadly.

The first in a two-book series, Uninvited tackles intriguing questions about free will, identity, and human nature. Steeped in New York Times bestselling author Sophie Jordan's trademark mix of gripping action and breathless romance, this suspenseful tale is perfect for fans of James Patterson, Michelle Hodkin, and Lisa McMann.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Uninvited?

I think one of my favorite things about UNINVITED is that it’s genre-defying. Other than belonging in the YA genre, it can’t really strictly be called paranormal, post-apocalyptic, dystopian, sci-fi, horror or romance.

It’s set in the near-future, with shades of sci-fi, but not enough in my opinion to be called straight-up sci-fi. Nor is it dystopian, although many times it is mistakenly referred to as such.

UNINVITED is unique in premise and unlike anything I’ve ever written. As an author, it’s always exciting when you write something wholly new. And UNINVITED was that for me.

Road Rash
by Mark Parsons
ARC Giveaway
Knopf Books for Young Readers
Released 2/11/2014

A teenage drummer finds out what life is really like on tour with a rock band in this funny, funky, bittersweet debut YA novel. For anyone who loved Almost Famous or This Is Spinal Tap.

After being dropped from one band, 17-year-old drummer Zach gets a chance to go on tour with a much better band. It feels like sweet redemption, but this is one rocky road trip. . . .

Zach's in control on the drums, driving the band, keeping things moving at the right pace. But when the show is over, his timing is all off. The jealousies and rivalries within his new group keep him off-balance. The awesome original song he recorded backfires. And the girl he left back home is suddenly talking about this other guy . . .

Mark Parsons has written a fast-paced, feel-good novel about a boy finding his place in the world, in a band, and in the music. Zach is a character teens will stand up and cheer for as he lands the perfect gig, and the perfect girl.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Road Rash?

Wow… good question. There were several things about the writing of ROAD RASH that I found wonderful, or enlightening, or humbling. (Or frequently all three.) But my favorite thing about the book itself is that now there is (or very soon will be) a book out there that “Gives the drummer some!” I mean, he/she is the dude in the back, sweating it out, laying it down, holding it together, all while driving that damn bus down the road every night. And what do they get for it? Uh… drummer jokes? The chance to haul more gear than the rest of the band combined? Blisters and a bad back? A stunning lack of respect/attention from the media, the crowd, and the world at large? (All of whom seem to fixate on the lead singer or occasionally the lead guitarist. But never the drummer.) Even the second-best rock ‘n roll film of all time—“This is Spinal Tap”—had the drummer as nothing but the butt of a running (umm… exploding) joke.
So yeah, among many other things that I’m thankful for, I’m pretty stoked to have a book out there that gives a little love to the people who’re the true heartbeat of the music.

The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender
by Leslye Walton
ARC Giveaway
Candlewick
Released 3/25/2014

Magical realism, lyrical prose, and the pain and passion of human love haunt this hypnotic generational saga.

Foolish love appears to be the Roux family birthright, an ominous forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. Ava—in all other ways a normal girl—is born with the wings of a bird. In a quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to fit in with her peers, sixteen-year old Ava ventures into the wider world, ill-prepared for what she might discover and naïve to the twisted motives of others. Others like the pious Nathaniel Sorrows, who mistakes Ava for an angel and whose obsession with her grows until the night of the Summer Solstice celebration. That night, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air, and Ava’s quest and her family’s saga build to a devastating crescendo. First-time author Leslye Walton has constructed a layered and unforgettable mythology of what it means to be born with hearts that are tragically, exquisitely human.

Avalon
by Mindee Arnett
Signed Hardcover Giveaway
Balzer + Bray
Released 1/21/2014

Winner - Shannon P.

A ragtag group of teenage mercenaries who crew the spaceship Avalon stumble upon a conspiracy that could threaten the entire galaxy in this fascinating and fast-paced sci-fi adventure from author Mindee Arnett.

Of the various star systems that make up the Confederation, most lie thousands of light-years from First Earth-and out here, no one is free. The agencies that govern the Confederation are as corrupt as the crime bosses who patrol it, and power is held by anyone with enough greed and ruthlessness to claim it. That power is derived from one thing: metatech, the devices that allow people to travel great distances faster than the speed of light.

Jeth Seagrave and his crew of teenage mercenaries have survived in this world by stealing unsecured metatech, and they're damn good at it. Jeth doesn't care about the politics or the law; all he cares about is earning enough money to buy back his parents' ship, Avalon, from his crime-boss employer and getting himself and his sister, Lizzie, the heck out of Dodge. But when Jeth finds himself in possession of information that both the crime bosses and the government are willing to kill for, he is going to have to ask himself how far he'll go to get the freedom he's wanted for so long.

Avalon is the perfect fit for teens new to sci-fi as well as seasoned sci-fi readers looking for more books in the YA space-and a great match for fans of Joss Whedon's cult hit show Firefly.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Avalon?

My favorite part of Avalon is definitely the characters. Jeth, the main character, is the head of a snarky, mischievous group of teenage spaceship thieves. They’re all orphans in one way or another, but together they become a family. They’re a fun ensemble, constantly joking and having a good time. They don’t always get along, but when things go sideways—as they do a lot in the story—they are completely loyal to each other.

The Witch Is Back
by Brittany Geragotelis
Hardcover Giveaway
Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Released 1/21/2014

Winner - Nora Geer

When two gorgeous, popular witches clash over a man, it’s magical mayhem in this conclusion to the Life’s a Witch trilogy!

It’s been a trying year for teen witch Hadley Bishop—she led her coven into battle against the Parrishables and lost her mother in a surprise attack. Now that the Parrishables and their leader, Samuel Parris, have been defeated, Hadley is looking forward to a relaxing, love-filled summer with boyfriend Asher Astley.

Hadley’s summer plans take an unexpected turn though when she and her coven head off to a witchy summer intensive. Once there, Hadley immediately finds herself in a power struggle with Brooklyn Sparks. Like Hadley, Brooklyn is gorgeous and popular, but she’s also…Asher’s ex-girlfriend?!

As if this news isn’t enough to rattle Hadley, there are rumors of a rogue witch in the woods, and someone is playing dangerous pranks around camp. Hadley suspects that Brooklyn is behind the pranks, but is she willing to risk losing her friends and Asher to prove it? In this electrifying conclusion to the Life’s a Witch series, Hadley will discover that love is more powerful than any spell—but it comes with a price.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about The Witch Is Back?

There are so many things I love about THE WITCH IS BACK! To be honest, it was the most fun book to write in the series. The whole thing takes place at a sort of witch camp, which I think is just so much fun! I had such great memories of my own summer camps, so it was fun to put a wicked spin on a time-honored tradition.

Plus, there’s sort of a “Hunger Games” style obstacle course the twitches have to compete in AND there’s the legend of the Witch in the Woods which is super creepy. To me, this book has everything, and is just one action-packed scene of witchcraft after another. Along with the super-sassy wit and awesome fashion we’ve come to love and expect from Hadley and her Cleri members, of course!

Her Dark Curiosity
by Megan Shepherd
Hardcover
Balzer + Bray
Released 1/28/2014

To defeat the darkness, she must first embrace it.

Months have passed since Juliet Moreau returned to civilization after escaping her father's island—and the secrets she left behind. Now, back in London once more, she is rebuilding the life she once knew and trying to forget Dr. Moreau’s horrific legacy—though someone, or something, hasn’t forgotten her.

As people close to Juliet fall victim one by one to a murderer who leaves a macabre calling card of three clawlike slashes, Juliet fears one of her father’s creations may have also escaped the island. She is determined to find the killer before Scotland Yard does, though it means awakening sides of herself she had thought long banished, and facing loves from her past she never expected to see again.

As Juliet strives to stop a killer while searching for a serum to cure her own worsening illness, she finds herself once more in the midst of a world of scandal and danger. Her heart torn in two, past bubbling to the surface, life threatened by an obsessive killer—Juliet will be lucky to escape alive.

With inspiration from Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this is a tantalizing mystery about the hidden natures of those we love and how far we’ll go to save them from themselves.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Her Dark Curiosity?

The thing I most adore about HER DARK CURIOSITY is a terrible spoiler that will give everything away, so I’m afraid it’s secret. Sorry. BUT! The second thing most I adore about the book is the atmosphere. The book takes place in Victorian England around Christmas time, and it’s a harsh winter when flower girls are freezing to death in the streets, and all the while the upper class just keeps having its fancy balls and holiday parties like nothing’s happening. But then a mass murderer starts stalking the city, and he doesn’t discriminate when it comes to his victims, and everyone is afraid for their lives.

Since the first book took place on a steamy tropical island, it was a challenge to maintain a similar Gothic feel in the exact opposite climate. I loved writing about the frost and dead trees and frozen lakes, and how dirty and industrial the city was compared to Moreau’s island. I set a few scenes in the glass walls of the fictional Royal Botanical greenhouse, where despite the cold weather it was always steamy and tropical, and it was fun to describe how this atmosphere reminded Juliet of the island and everything that had happened there.

Divided We Fall
by Trent Reedy
Hardcover
Arthur A. Levine Books
Released 1/28/2014

From the author of the acclaimed WORDS IN THE DUST: an action-packed YA novel set in a frighteningly plausible near future, about what happens when the States are no longer United.

Danny Wright never thought he'd be the man to bring down the United States of America. In fact, he enlisted in the National Guard because he wanted to serve his country the way his father did. When the Guard is called up on the Idaho governor's orders to police a protest in Boise, it seems like a routine crowd-control mission ... but then Danny's gun misfires, spooking the other soldiers and the already fractious crowd, and by the time the smoke clears, twelve people are dead.

The president wants the soldiers arrested. The governor swears to protect them. And as tensions build on both sides, the conflict slowly escalates toward the unthinkable: a second American civil war.

With political questions that are popular in American culture yet rare in YA fiction, and a provocative plot that could far too easily become real, DIVIDED WE FALL is Trent Reedy's very timely YA debut.
