16 Question of the Week: Are You Doing NaNoWriMo This Year?

Hey everyone! It’s Clara Kensie, back with a new Question of the Week! Pretty much the only thing writers love as much as writing is talking about writing. So each week here at Adventures in YA Publishing, I post a question for you to answer. The questions cover all topics important to writers: craft, career, writers’ life, reading and books. Together we’ll become better writers by sharing tips and discussing our habits and practices.

ARE YOU DOING NaNoWriMo?

Hello, my lovelies! I’m working on revisions for the sequel to RUN TO YOU (deadline is December 1), so I’m going to keep the Questions of the Week short and sweet until then. You guys don’t mind, do you? I’m sure you have a lot of writing to do, too! Especially if you answer YES to the Question of the Week:

Are you doing NaNoWriMo?

It’s almost November, and all writers know what that means: It’s National Novel Writing Month, when writers around the world try to write 50,000 words of a brand-new manuscript. Are you participating this year?

MY ANSWER: Sadly, no. The timing just didn’t work out for me. Although I’ll be spending hours and hours (and hours and hours) writing in November, I will be finishing the revisions on my book, not writing 50,000 shiny new words on a new manuscript. I did NaNo two years ago and won it, hooray! I hope the timing will work out for next year, because the camaraderie and support of NaNo is so inspiring and fun.

YOUR TURN: Are you participating in NaNoWriMo this year? If so, what are you writing? Is this your first time or are you a veteran? What kind of preparations do you do for NaNo? Or, do you just jump in and pants your manuscript without a plan?

If you like, post your NaNo user name in the comments and find some new Writing Buddies!

  1. I am doing it for the first time - am so excited! I have two middle grade novels in the editing/submitting phase, but NaNoWriMo is where I will draft my first YA novel. So excited! My user name is WMM!

  2. I'm doing it, despite my schedule being hectic as anything this November! Completed three times before, failed once. I'm optimistic this year because I've managed to squeeze in the prep work. Of course, I could be wrong! My user name's CharmedLassie.

  3. I'm not doing NaNo (I have plenty of writing projects to keep me busy) but good luck to everyone who is :)

  4. Yes! This is my second year doing it; last year I had a blast, and this year I'm hooking up with my old local group. (There's also a writing group formed from the NaNo group, so the two groups will sort of be intermingling.) I'm excited, but I'm starting a new job this week so I hope I can handle that stress along with NaNo.

  6. YES! :D This is my fifth year doing it (I when I was nine in 2009) and I love it more and more as the years pass! When the day comes that I'm too busy to do it, it will be a sad day indeed . . .

    I'm on the YWP: sportakate
And the adult program! :D: sportakate

  7. I am! This will be my 4th year participating! My students are also participating in the Young Writer's Program, but most of them aren't officially signing up on the site - they are just setting goals in my classroom.

I "won" the last 3 years, so fingers crossed I stay on track this year again. Usually I start good then have to race to catch up!

  8. I've had a bunch of deadlines lately and life crises and I'm desperate to get drafting on Book 2 in my FORBIDDEN trilogy (Harpercollins, Fall 2014) but no such luck. I've had notes and research done for a YEAR (a revised complete draft is due by end of March to my editor) but life keeps interfering so - deep breath - I'm going to try NaNoWriMo to push myself to get started and see how far I can get. So, 50,000+ words is my goal! GULP! Well, because the book will probably be closer to 90,000 words. LOL.

  9. I hadn't planned on doing it, but I might sign up. I did it last year, and won, so I know I can do it, but I'm not sure I'll get it done this year since I have a mix of writing and editing I'll be doing. I'll try though.

  10. I won't be doing NaNoWriMo this year. Got quite a bit going on so I won't be able to . But those participating, I hope it is a fun time purging a great story from their system. :-)

  11. I LOVE NaNo, but sadly I'm stuck in a work vortex that has me splattered all over the pavement - so I won't be diving in this year.

  12. Hey, Clara, good luck with the revisions!! :) I've never done NaNo; it's not really my style of writing...I don't "do" word counts. I like to tidy things up (not obsessively so, however) as I go, and include foreshadowing and symbolism, etc. Can't do that if I'm slapping plotlines down in 30 days or less! But I can see how it would be helpful to a lot of writers. :)

  13. Not this year. It was much fun last year, but I have way too many manuscripts that need revising before I go starting anything new! I wish the best to everyone jumping in this year, though it's certainly well worth it!

  14. I'm jumping back in this year, after doing the Camp NaNoWriMo version instead for the last few years. I'll be working on a MG animal fantasy featuring a polar bear cub, a snowshoe hare, and a wolf -- I suspect it'll be nice to actually finish a complete draft in 50K (or less), instead of winding up with 2/3 of a novel the way I did other years. :) Usually I start off with characters, a vague notion of the plot, and a list of possible scenes, and more or less wing it. I'd meant to do a more thorough outline this time around, but I have no idea what happened to October (seriously, anybody know where this month went?!), so it looks like I'm going to be pantsing it yet again after all. I'm Poetigress over there if anyone needs a buddy. Good luck, everyone!

  15. Yes, I will be participating in NaNoWriMo again this year and I am hoping it will be third time lucky. Each time I get more words down, but I have yet to win. Just finished my final edit on my children's manuscript, so feel it is the right time to jump into another novel. I will be writing a mainstream comedy this year and I am YorkshireBelle if anyone wishes to buddy up.

  16. NaNo for me again. Working on a YA sci-fi. I'm BWBB.
