4 Question of the Week - How Many Blogs Do You Read?

Hey everyone! It’s Clara Kensie, back with a new Question of the Week! Pretty much the only thing writers love as much as writing is talking about writing. So each week here at Adventures in YA Publishing, I post a question for you to answer. The questions cover all topics important to writers: craft, career, writers’ life, reading and books. Together we’ll become better writers by sharing tips and discussing our habits and practices.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

HOW MANY BLOGS DO YOU READ?

MY ANSWER: I used to subscribe to dozens of blogs, mostly author, industry, and writing-tip blogs (I also used to do a writing-tip roundup for Adventures in YA Publishing). I couldn’t keep up with them all and my Google Reader (now defunct) contained hundreds of unread posts. I learned so much, but eventually I realized that I was spending more time reading blogs about HOW to write than I was actually writing. Now, I subscribe to only a handful of blogs. Most of them are YA book review blogs—and Adventures in YA Publishing, of course. Instead of subscribing via RSS feed, I subscribe via email so I’m sure to read each post. I don’t comment very often—a habit I want to change. I still read author, industry, and writing-tip blogs, but usually I discover those posts through links on Twitter and Tumblr.

YOUR TURN: How many blogs do you subscribe to? What kind of blogs? How much time per day/week do you spend reading blogs? Do you subscribe via RSS or email? Do you read them all every day? What motivates you to comment?

  1. Gosh, tons. ;P I wouldn't hesitate to say that I'm close to fifty (or past it) by now. Though maybe a third of the blogs I'm subscribed to aren't updated anymore and most of them are book/writing blogs, so they're pretty quick reads. :)

  2. I do spend more time reading blogs than writing too. But to keep people following my blog I feel like I have to follow a lot of blogs. I have 300 on my blogger dashboard but I don't read everyone all the time. I follow some for industry advice, a few agent ones, lots of author friend blogs, and book review blogs. I have started focusing on reading blogs M-W mostly and less the rest of the week just to get more done. And I accept I can't get to anyone's blog every time they post.

  3. I subscribe to about a dozen blogs by RSS feed and a couple through email. I don't read them all everyday. Some are short enough that I can read through them quickly. Not all of them post everyday so that also helps in getting through them. I try to comment if I can add to the conversation. I think it's nice to comment so the writer knows someone is reading his/her post.

  4. I used to spend A LOT of time each week reading and commenting on blogs. Easily 3-6 hours. And like you, it was mostly posts dealing with writing. When I lost my old domain and decided to write for my target audience (NA readers), it changed not only what I post about. It changed how many blogs I read. Now I spend more time on Twitter. No many of the blogs I used to read are interested in NA. No point wasting time with them.
