11 New YALit Releases 3/9-3/15 Plus Giveaway of SACRED by Elana K. Arnold

THIS WEEK'S GIVEAWAY

Sacred
by Elana K. Arnold
Hardcover

A grieving girl meets a boy with mystical powers in this passionate love story.
Growing up on Catalina Island, off the California coast, Scarlett Wenderoth has led a fairly isolated life. After her brother dies, her isolation deepens as she withdraws into herself, shutting out her friends and boyfriend. Her parents, shattered by their own sorrow, fail to notice Scarlett's pain and sudden alarming thinness. Scarlett finds pleasure only on her horse, escaping to the heart of the island on long, solitary rides. One day, as she races around a bend, Scarlett is startled by a boy who raises his hand in warning and says one word: "Stop."

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Sacred?

There are actually many things I loved about writing SACRED--the opportunity to indulge in my love of horses, exploring the heady sensuality of Scarlett and Will's connection, the research into island life and Kabbalah. But stepping back from the process and revisiting SACRED as a reader, I find that the thing I love most about the book is the relationship between Scarlett and her best friend Lily Adams. I love both of these girls, and I love the way they love each other, the ways Lily tries to buoy Scarlett up as she copes with her grief. Lily is the kind of friend I always wanted to have (and she's based in part on a friend I really did have), and she's the kind of friend I'd like to be.

LAST WEEK'S GIVEAWAY WINNERS

Flowers in the Sky
by Lynn Joseph
Hardcover

WINNER: Joni Patterson

Fifteen-year-old Nina Perez is faced with a future she never expected. She must leave her Garden of Eden, her lush home in the Dominican Republic, when she's sent by her mother to seek out a better life with her brother in New York. As Nina searches for some glimpse of familiarity amid the jarring world of Washington Heights, she must uncover her own strength. She learns to uncover roots within foreign soil and finds a way to grow, just like the orchids that blossom on her fire escape. And when she is confronted by ugly secrets about her brother's business, she comes to understand the realities of life in this new place. But then she meets him-that green-eyed boy- who she can't erase from her thoughts, the one who just might help her learn to see beauty in spite of tragedy.

From the acclaimed author of The Color of My Words comes a powerful story about a young girl who must make her way in a new world and find her place within it.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Flowers in the Sky?

My favorite thing about this book is how Nina notices that people, like her beloved flowers, will wither away without love and care, which is what happens to her older brother Darrio who has been transformed from the sparkling artistic gardener he once was in the Dominican Republic into a closed off, secretive, untrusting man in New York. I love that Nina tries to maintain her spirit and light in ways that fit her circumstances and that even the jaded Luis Santana recognizes Nina's special light.

Deep Betrayal
by Anne Greenwood Brown
Hardcover

Once you dive into Deep Betrayal, the sequel to Lies Beneath, you won't come up for air!
It's been thirty days, two hours, and seventeen minutes since Calder left Lily standing on the shores of Lake Superior. Not that she's counting. And when Calder does return, it's not quite the reunion Lily hoped for. Especially after she lets her father in on a huge secret: he, like Calder, is a merman. Obsessed with his new identity, Lily's dad monopolizes Calder's time as the two of them spend every day in the water, leaving Lily behind.

Then dead bodies start washing ashore. Calder blames his mermaid sisters, but Lily fears her father has embraced the merman's natural need to kill. As the body count grows, everyone is pointing fingers. Lily doesn't know what to believe—only that whoever's responsible is sure to strike again. . . .

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Deep Betrayal?

Because this sequel switches points of view (LIES BENEATH was told from Calder's pov; DEEP BETRAYAL is told from Lily's), I had a lot of fun letting people into Lily's mind so they could understand her better. Lily's internal dialogue fills in the necessary holes from LIES BENEATH and also allows readers to get a better view of the minor characters because Calder never had the level of access to them that Lily does.

Code (Virals)
by Kathy Reichs and Brendan Reichs
Hardcover

The Virals are put to the ultimate test when they find a geocache containing an ornate puzzle box. Shelton decodes the cipher inside, only to find more tantalizing clues left by "The Gamemaster." A second, greater geocache is within reach--if the Virals are up to the challenge.

But the hunt takes a dark turn when Tory locates the other box--a fake bomb, along with a sinister proposal from The Gamemaster. Now, the real game has begun: another bomb is out there--a real one--and the clock is ticking.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Code (Virals)?

My favorite thing about Code is how the main characters develop. Tory and Ben have a complicated relationship that only becomes more entangled as the book develops. Meanwhile, Hi and Shelton face new challenges, both at school and within the group. If I can cheat, I'd say my co-favorite thing about the book is The Game. The Virals get caught up in a web of dangerous tasks that they must complete, or else a madman will bring death and destruction to Charleston. It's pretty intense. Overall, I think Code is my favorite book in the Virals series so far.

Trinkets
by Kirsten Smith
Hardcover

Sixteen-year-old Moe's Shoplifters Anonymous meetings are usually punctuated by the snores of an old man and the whining of the world's unhappiest housewife. Until the day that Tabitha Foster and Elodie Shaw walk in. Tabitha has just about everything she wants: money, friends, popularity, a hot boyfriend who worships her...and clearly a yen for stealing. So does Elodie, who, despite her goodie-two-shoes attitude pretty much has "klepto" written across her forehead in indelible marker. But both of them are nothing compared to Moe, a bad girl with an even worse reputation.

Tabitha, Elodie, and Moe: a beauty queen, a wallflower, and a burnout-a more unlikely trio high school has rarely seen. And yet, when Tabitha challenges them to a steal-off, so begins a strange alliance linked by the thrill of stealing and the reasons that spawn it.

Hollywood screenwriter Kirsten Smith tells this story from multiple perspectives with humor and warmth as three very different girls who are supposed to be learning the steps to recovery end up learning the rules of friendship.
