18 New YA Books in Stores 10/13-10/19 Plus Weekly Giveaway

THIS WEEK'S GIVEAWAY

Yesterday
by C. K. Kelly Martin
Hardcover

THEN: The formation of the UNA, the high threat of eco-terrorism, the mammoth rates of unemployment and subsequent escape into a world of virtual reality are things any student can read about in their 21st century textbooks and part of the normal background noise to Freya Kallas's life. Until that world starts to crumble.

NOW: It's 1985. Freya Kallas has just moved across the world and into a new life. On the outside, she fits in at her new high school, but Freya feels nothing but removed. Her mother blames it on the grief over her father's death, but how does that explain the headaches and why do her memories feel so foggy? When Freya lays eyes on Garren Lowe, she can't get him out of her head. She's sure that she knows him, despite his insistence that they've never met. As Freya follows her instincts and pushes towards hidden truths, the two of them unveil a strange and dangerous world where their days may be numbered. Unsure who to trust, Freya and Garren go on the run from powerful forces determined to tear them apart and keep them from discovering the truth about their shared pasts (and futures), her visions, and the time and place they really came from. Yesterday will appeal to fans of James Dashner's The Maze Runner, Veronica Roth's Divergent, Amy Ryan's Glow, Laini Taylor's Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and Ally Condie's Matched.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Yesterday?

I was sixteen in 1985, like Yesterday’s main character Freya, so I loved being able to go back and experience that year again. It was an amazing time for music and I have a long, long list of musical acts from the period in my acknowledgments because they were a huge influence on me. Yesterday was a terrific excuse to listen to hours and hours of eighties music to help me get back into the mindset (my fav 80s radio station is the UK’s Absolute 80s). I also trawled through lists of TV shows and movies on back then and read about events from 1985. I wanted to get all the tiny details of the time right so, for example, I was careful not to have the characters listening to a song that came out in late 85 when the book is set in February. There’s a point during the book where Freya and Garren go see The Breakfast Club and it truly was out in North American theatres at that time.

Hanging by a Thread
by Sophie Littlefield
Hardcover

Winner: Brooke

“Dark secrets, a dangerous romance, and a chilling murder mystery I won’t soon forget.” —Stacey Jay, author of Juliet Immortal

In a town where appearance means everything, how deep beneath the surface will Clare dig to uncover a murderer?

Summer is the best part of the year in Winston, California, and the Fourth of July is the highlight of the season. People consider themselves lucky to live in the quaint, serene beachside town, and native Clare Knight, now a city girl, feels doubly lucky to be moving back there a week before the July festivities kick off.

But the perfect town Clare remembers has changed, and everyone is praying that this summer will be different from the last two—that this year’s Fourth of July festival won’t see one of their own vanish without a trace, leaving no leads and no suspects. The media are in a frenzy predicting a third disappearance, but the town depends on tourist dollars, so the residents of Winston are trying desperately to pretend nothing’s wrong.

And they’re not the only ones hiding something.

Clare has been blessed—or perhaps cursed—with a gift: she can see people’s pasts when she touches their clothes. And since she’s a seamstress who redesigns vintage clothing, her visions are frequent—and usually unwanted. When she stumbles across a denim jacket that once belonged to Amanda Stavros, last year’s Fourth of July victim, Clare sees her perfect town begin to come apart at the seams.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Hanging by a Thread?

I loved taking a passion of mine and turning it into something mysterious and even threatening. Sewing is usually considered a fairly uninteresting pastime, and people might imagine a teenage seamstress to be boring and introverted. What if, instead, it was the gateway to an unknown world, a threat of danger, even the risk of death? By giving my main character, Clare, a family legacy (several generations of women in her family have been dressmakers) I was able to add another haunting dimension to the story. I also got to research vintage fashion, which was an unexpected and fun bonus!

Hardcover

Winner: AX20

Readers of Carrie Ryan and Richelle Mead will love this dark revenge fantasy.

At sixteen, Velveteen Monroe was kidnapped and murdered by a madman named Bonesaw. But that's not the problem.
The problem is she landed in the City of the Dead. And while it's not a fiery inferno, it's certainly no heaven either. Grey, ashen and crumbling more and more by the day, and everyone has a job to do there. Which doesn't leave Velveteen much time to do anything about what’s really on her mind.

It'll be brutal...and awesome.

A risk she’s willing to take—except fate has just given her reason to stick around: an unreasonably hot and completely off-limits coworker.

The Space Between Us
by Jessica Martinez
Hardcover

From the author of Virtuosity, a novel about two sisters and the secrets they tell, the secrets they keep—and the secret that could tear them apart.Amelia is used to being upstaged by her charismatic younger sister, Charly. She doesn’t mind, mostly, that it always falls to her to cover for Charly’s crazy, impulsive antics. But one night, Charly’s thoughtlessness goes way too far, and she lands both sisters in serious trouble.     Amelia’s not sure she can forgive Charly this time, and not sure she wants to . . . but forgiveness is beside the point. Because Charly is also hiding a terrible secret, and the truth just might tear them apart forever.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about The Space Between Us?

My favorite thing about THE SPACE BETWEEN US is my relationship with Amelia and Charly. Yeah, you read that right—my relationship with them. Somewhere during the writing process I became the third (invisible) sister. When I was in the thick of it, I felt like these girls were my own to love and tease and fight and make up with, to the extent that when I finished writing the novel I was a little heartbroken. I knew they were still there, that I could pick up the book and read it whenever I wanted, but that the period of time when I was close enough to really know their thoughts was over. And yes, I know that makes me a little bit crazy.

This Is Not Forgiveness
by Celia Rees
Hardcover

Everyone says Caro is bad, but Jamie can't help himself. She is totally different from the other girls. But he soon realizes there is more to Caro-much more. Consider: How she disappears for days at a time, or the scars on her wrists, or her talk of revolution and taking action. Jamie's also worried about his older brother Rob. Back from Afghanistan and struggling with PTSD, Rob is living in a world of his own. Which is why it's so strange that Rob and Caro know one another-and why their secrets feel so very dangerous.

Author Question: What is your favorite thing about This Is Not Forgiveness?

What were some of my best things about writing the book. I'd say, in no particular order:

Rob's voice - I loved writing from his perspective and in his voice, it was as though I could hear him talking in my head. I knew I had to make his experience as a soldier as accurate as possible. I had to do right by him.

Caro's obsessions - from Ouija boards and the tarot through to radical action and the Red Army Faction. While I was writing, all kinds of people were taking to the streets in the U.K., we had everything from political demonstrations to urban riots. I had to keep adding more to the story!

Jamie. He is the least charismatic but the most like other people. He is 'every boy' and he carries the story, so I had to make his voice count and his real worth shine through.
