4 First Five Pages Workshop - Revisions

First, I have to say how impressed Lisa and I are with these entries. As we've seen with these examples, voice is critical. It's wonderful to write letter-perfect, text-book prose, and few people have the skill to do what all of you did very easily here, but in kidlit today, we need to strive toward injecting clarity as well as attitude into the story. First and foremost, though, story rules. I think you all have solid writing, story, and at the very least potential for intriguing characters.

As Vickie asked the question about revisions, I'll address that. We will be happy to look at revisions. I would like to give everyone who entered the opportunity to comment on each other's work first. Once we have comments from all five of you on all entries apart from your own, you can submit revisions by email. I'll post them again as a block on the Saturday after I get them--hopefully, next Saturday. Then we continue. Rinse. Repeat. Until we start a new workshop on March 12, anyway.

We're so impressed with you ladies, not just with the stories themselves but with the comments and the professionalism with which all this is being handled. WOOT! Hope we're not killing anyone, but we promised to be honest and work toward a marketable product. The number of subs agents are getting these days is brutal. So keep up the great work!

Happy writing,

Martina and Lisa

  1. What a tremendous endeavor you all are embarking on! A very helpful one. Can't wait to see the results. :)

  2. So many awesome books! *sigh* I need more reading time. :)

  3. This is an terrific idea, but I've come to it a bit late. How do you submit an entry and will you be running this again?
Thanks very much for this and everything you provide on this site.

  4. Thanks! We will be doing this the first Saturday of every month.

Tell us what you think. We'd love to hear from you! :)
